This year too, Alba Adriatica has received the important recognition of the Green Flag, confirming itself as ideal location for children.
Every year, a scientific technical committee made up of 3,075 Italian and foreign paediatricians assesses Italian beaches, deciding which ones are most suitable for children. The assessment is carried out on multiple levels, from the quality and healthiness of the air and water to the presence or absence of games or other activities aimed at younger children. In the last two years, only two new flags have been awarded, despite numerous applications, which is proof of the rigour applied by the paediatricians in their choices.
• The presence of sand rather than pebbles, with a sloping entry into the sea to make access to the water gradual and safe.
•Beaches that are easy to get to and have enough space between the umbrellas to allow for free play
• Clean sand for children to play in complete safety
• Beach lifeguard service
• The presence of children's games and equipment
• Leisure and entertainment for parents
• Bars and food establishments near the beach that can cater to children's needs
Italo Farnetani, a university professor of paediatrics, president of the International Workshop of Green Flags and initiator of the project, explained in an interview how:
“Abruzzo confirms itself as the region with the highest density, i.e. concentration, of Green Flags: one for every 11.8 km”, according to what has emerged from early forecasts.
“Given the increase in foreign families with children choosing to holiday by the sea in Italy, and in light of last year's boom, it has been decided for 2025 to also translate the child safety guide for the seaside into French and German. This guide, already available in English and Spanish, offers useful advice for swimming and having fun in the water with youngsters safely, avoiding the biggest danger, drowning. It also provides information on how to protect children from heatstroke and their skin from excessive sun exposure, as well as tips for the journey to their holiday destination.”.
