This year too, Alba Adriatica has received the important recognition of the Green Flag, confirming itself as ideal location for children.
Each year, a scientific technical committee made up of 3,238 Italian and foreign paediatricians assesses Italian beaches and declares which ones are most suitable for children. The assessment is carried out on multiple levels, from the quality and healthiness of the air and water to the presence or absence of games or other activities aimed at younger children. This year, only three new flags were awarded in Italy, despite numerous applications, which demonstrates the rigor applied by the paediatricians in their choices.
• The presence of sand rather than pebbles, with a sloping entry into the sea to make access to the water gradual and safe.
•Beaches that are easy to get to and have enough space between the umbrellas to allow for free play
• Clean sand for children to play in complete safety
• Beach lifeguard service
• The presence of children's games and equipment
• Leisure and entertainment for parents
• Bars and food establishments near the beach that can cater to children's needs
Italo Farnetani, a professor of paediatrics, regarded as «Italy’s most famous paediatrician» and the founder of the initiative, pointed out that «the first rule for ensuring the safety of young children at the seaside is to teach them to swim». In Italy, however, only 30 per cent of children and teenagers have genuine swimming ability, whilst the remaining 70 per cent can swim only to a limited extent or cannot swim at all. For this reason, Farnetani recommends the use of armbands during the first four years of life and, subsequently, swimming lessons with qualified instructors.
When choosing Green Flags, priority is given to safe, lively, and well-equipped beaches, where children can socialise and receive stimuli useful to their development.
